The TOW Outdoor Classroom is a sequence of standards-based lessons taught in our outdoor classroom over the course of the school year. In these lessons, real-world connections can be made to science, math and social studies in the outdoors. There are six lessons for each grade, K-5. Each lesson is carefully designed per grade and linked to NGSS, CCSS and CA HSS standards, and match the sequencing of instruction over the year. Lessons were developed in conjunction with grade level teachers, science specialists, volunteer parents and many garden mentors. Over much trial and error, we found lessons that work well with our site, the rigorous standards, our Southern California seasons and the school year calendar!
Lessons are taught during school hours in 45-60 minute periods. Groups consist of 20-30 students and 2-3 adults.
